Book Review: Traces of I

Book Review: Traces of I

I was gifted this book in return of an honest opinion

Traces of I is an inspirational quick read that touches upon very relatable subjects that, more than likely, have affected all of us during our lives, for example lack of self-confidence and the longing to change and be someone else.

'April was always an ugly duckling growing up and that didn't change throughout her life. With her 30th birthday fast approaching, April meets the love of her life - but it comes at a cost.

With the world changing around her, April feels the need to better herself from the drap, boring, safe April that she is. These changes bring on different challenges in her love life and she is starting to question everything around her.

Is April destined for a loveless life? Or will her recent life choices give her everything she's ever dreamed of?'

The introduction of the troubled main character,  April, creates immediate connection; we're introduced to her while she's on a first date suffering from nerves, something that we have all experienced, therefore we can picture ourselves in her shoes. This is also aided by the clear imagery created by author, Tracy Kiss. This was the thing I enjoyed most about this read, the way everything has such a clear and elaborate description to easily create the scenario in your mind. Also something I loved was the constant commentary going on inside April's head - it really helped me understand the character more.

On the other hand I did get confused about some aspects of the book, for instance the use of alcohol. It contrasts the supposed comfort that April has with her new beau, therefore I didn't really understand the extent of how much it featured and why Kiss involved this, however, there is probably some deeper meaning to it that needs delving in to.

Additionally at one point in the book things take such a dramatic turn the term whiplash comes to mind - what I originally thought of April was changed as a result of such a spontaneous twist - but I guess that you'll have to read in order to find out what I mean!

Overall, I enjoyed Traces of I. It took me only a few hours to read in one sitting, accompanied with chocolate and a glass of wine of course, and would suggest it to any of those who suffer from self-confidence issues, who have been bullied, who are struggling with romance; Kiss has captured all of this content within this piece.

Some extra information - Tracy Kiss has pledged to donate her first £1000 to an anti-bullying charity showing that Kiss is very enthusiastic about supporting the work that she has chosen to involve in her writing.

Also, you can show your support with a Tweet or an Instagram or Facebook photo with these two hashtags: #IAmApril #TracesOfI

It's simple, take a selfie with your eyes closed and finger over your lips.

Eyes Closed symbolises beauty comes from within, don't judge a book by its cover, whereas finger over your lips reminds you and other that you should think before you speak - consider the feelings of others.
